“Take Me” by Saul Balagura

In conjunction with the exhibition “Darfur: Photojournalists Respond,” Holocaust Museum Houston is pleased to display an original work by Houston artist Saul Balagura that vividly embodies the despair that refugees in Darfur are currently facing. The work is accompanied by a poem, also written by Balagura, with the same title.

“TAKE ME”

Carry me on your wings
fly as far as the wind
– and then some more –
don’t stop ‘til we are just
a memory behind a firestorm
too bitter to breath in
too arid to grow flowers
too fertile to kill
I who was to die
am living
and you who were living
are dead
carry me little donkey
far away, friend,
far away.

– Saul Balagura, June 20, 2007
