Authors Jack Fairweather and Bev Saltzman Lewyn will discuss their respective books. Fairweather’s The Volunteer: One Man, an Underground Army, and the Secret Mission to Destroy Auschwitz tells the incredible true story of Witold Pilecki, a Polish resistance fighter’s infiltration of Auschwitz to sabotage the camp from within, and his death-defying attempt to warn the Allies about the Nazis’ plans. Lewyn’s On The Run In Nazi Berlin: A Memoir is the story of her own father-in-law, Bert Lewyn. In Berlin, 1942, the Gestapo arrested 18-year-old Bert Lewyn and his parents, sending Bert to work in a factory making guns and his parents to their deaths. Bert went underground, surviving the terror, and immigrated to the United States in 1949.
