Speaking Up! Confronting Hate Speech will underscore the ways in which words can lead to genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The exhibition will provide historical and current examples drawing out the connection between speech and the commission of atrocities, while examining the strategies that might be deployed to counter what we call “hate speech.”
Speaking Up! will focus on three key questions:
- Is there a connection between hate speech, hate crimes, and atrocities?
- How does hate speech divide societies politically?
- How does hate speech contribute to polarization among people?
Speaking Up! Confronting Hate Speech is curated by Holocaust Museum Houston in partnership with Leora Kahn, Ph.D.; PROOF: Media for Social Justice; David J. Simon, Director, Genocide Studies Program, Yale University; and the Genocide Center in Johannesburg, South Africa. Following its opening in Houston, the exhibition will travel to other sites throughout the U.S., South Africa, and Australia.
