SUMMARY:Telling Cuentos Student Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop institutes a cultural aspect to the writing of historical stories that challenges the traditional linear and formalist approaches to writing “history”. Following the influence of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Hamilton\, this workshop will work toward being able to incorporate cultural\, family\, and personal stories into a new way of writing prose or poetry. \nChristopher Carmona is the author of El Rinche: The Ghost Ranger of the Rio Grande\, which was a finalist for the 2019 Best Young Adult Novel for the Texas Institute of Letters. Currently\, he is working on finishing this series of YA novels. Book Two is out now. His short story collection\, The Road to Llorona Park\, won the 2016 NACCS Tejas Best Fiction Award and was listed as one of the top 8 Latinx books in 2016 by NBC News. He has a chapter in Reverberations of Racial Violence: Critical Reflections on Borderlands History discussing intergenerational trauma for Mexican Americans in the Rio Grande Valley. \nAs an educational activist\, Carmona serves as a board member of the national award-winning organization\, Refusing To Forget\, which researches and promotes the history of violence against Mexican Americans and Latinos in the early 20th Century and beyond. Currently he serves as the Chair of the NACCS Tejas Foco Committee on Implementing MAS in PreK-12 Education in Texas. He was a leader in getting the TEKS-based Mexican American Studies High School Course approved by the Texas State Board of Education\, which is the only State Board approved Mexican American Studies course in the United States to date. He served on Responsible Ethnic Studies Textbook committee that was awarded the “float like a butterfly\, sting like a bee” award for excellence in educational leadership from the Mexican American School Board Association (MASBA). \n \n Register

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Life of Holocaust Survivor Naomi Warren\, z"l
DESCRIPTION:Naomi Warren\, z”l \nPlease join us in celebrating Holocaust Survivor Naomi Warren’s life by signing her 100th birthday card; watching her video testimony; sharing photos\, interviews and videos from her amazing life; and previewing a trailer of a new film\, Finding Light\, about Ballet Austin’s Light / The Holocaust and Humanity Project\, which is dedicated to Naomi and based on her experiences. \nNaomi Warren was born on September 1\, 1920 and grew up in Wołkowysk\, a small city in eastern Poland. Naomi was finalizing arrangements to attend a university in England when Germany invaded Poland in September 1939\, her 19th birthday. Shortly after\, Soviet troops marched into Poland from the east\, occupying her hometown. \nIn the summer of 1941\, Germany overran eastern Poland and began systematically isolating\, interning and murdering its Jewish population. Naomi and her husband\, Alexander\, were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau in January 1942\, riding in an airless cattle car that was so crowded they could barely sit down. They were separated when they arrived and Alexander was sent to the men’s camp where he perished several months later. Selected for a labor detail\, Naomi resolved to survive. Naomi endured almost three years in Auschwitz-Birkenau. As Soviet troops approached in the beginning of 1945\, she and her fellow inmates were sent to Ravensbrück and then to Bergen-Belsen. When the British liberated her there in April 1945\, Naomi felt as if “the whole world opened up” for her. \nThe following year\, Naomi came to Houston with the help of her maternal uncle William Salman and her sister Elizabeth Brandon who had settled in the United States before the war. Naomi’s father Samuel had survived the war as an internee in Siberia and he came to the U.S. at the end of 1946. In 1949\, Naomi married Martin Warren and together they established a business importing Danish hams to the United States. They had three children—Helen\, Geri and Benjamin. Naomi’s legacy lives on at the Museum through the Warren Fellowship for Future Teachers\, established by her family in 2000\, in honor of her 80th birthday.

SUMMARY:Community Art Workshop: Día de los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:oin us for a community art workshop with artist Theresa Escobedo. Participants will have an opportunity to learn how to make sugar skulls\, paper flowers and create papel picado in honor of Día de los Muertos. \nThe sugar skulls\, flowers\, and papel picado created in this workshop will also be included in the community ofrenda (altar) displayed in the museum through November. \nTheresa Escobedo (b. 1985) \nTheresa Escobedo is a multi-disciplinary artist\, curator\, and arts administrator active in Houston. Her creative work intersects ancestry\, history\, and spiritualism\, and combines elements of the artist’s mixed cultural heritage to demonstrate and ultimately represent broad ancestral influences and cosmopolitan spiritual perspectives. Her practice has evolved to include the design and installation of ofrendas\, each of which demonstrates a decisive act of remembrance and works to safeguard familial mythologies\, complex cultural histories\, and spiritual pursuits. These days\, her approach to altar-making merges indigenous practices with contemporary influences and affirms the universality of the practice of altar-making as an art form. \nHer most recent work\, presented at Holocaust Museum Houston\, has its roots in the family history described in the book Stolen Heritage. Authored by the artist’s third cousin\, Abel Rubio\, the published tome offers anecdotal accounts of a family’s struggle for survival in the Texas/Mexican frontier\, participation on both sides of the conflict during the Texas/Mexican revolution\, and the post-revolutionary trauma of stolen life and land. \nThe event will be hosted in person and is for all ages. Admission is free and open to the public. \nPlease note: Face masks are required for all guests ages 2 and up. Complimentary masks are available at the Security desk. \n \n Register
