SUMMARY:Rescue Board: The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Erbelding is the author of Rescue Board: The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe\, which won the JDC-Herbert Katzki National Jewish Book Award in 2018. She holds a PhD in American history from George Mason University. She worked as an archivist and curator at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum from 2003-2015\, and as a historian since 2015\, including for the Museum’s Americans and the Holocaust exhibition. Her work has previously been featured in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the New Yorker\, and on the History Channel and National Geographic. \nRescue Board is the extraordinary story of the War Refugee Board\, a US government effort late in World War II to save the remaining Jews of Europe. The staff of the War Refugee Board gathered D.C. pencil pushers\, international relief workers\, smugglers\, diplomats\, millionaires\, and rabble-rousers to run operations across four continents and a dozen countries. They tricked Nazis\, forged identity papers\, maneuvered food and medicine into concentration camps\, recruited spies\, leaked news stories\, laundered money\, negotiated ransoms\, and funneled millions of dollars into Europe\, ultimately saving tens of thousands of lives.\n \n Register

SUMMARY:The Systematic Persecution of Uyghurs: Conversation with a Genocide Survivor
DESCRIPTION:Join Holocaust Museum Houston for a critical discussion with the organization Campaign for Uyghurs and hear from a Uyghur survivor. \n“The Uyghurs\, a Turkic Muslim group\, have been targeted by the Chinese government for decades. In recent years\, the government has escalated a campaign of persecution and mass detention in a sprawling system of forced labor camps and prisons. Between one and three million Uyghurs—of a population of 12 million—are currently in some form of detention\, and those who are not still face rapidly tightening control restricting their ability to express their identity.” – United States Holocaust Memorial Museum \nCampaign for Uyghurs works to promote and advocate for the human rights and democratic freedoms for the Uyghurs and other Turkic people in East Turkistan (referred to in China as “Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region”). It mobilizes individuals and the international community and builds bridges to take action on behalf of and to raise public awareness of the Uyghur issue with a special focus on Uyghur women and youth\, and to activate persons and entities to work together to stop the systematic human rights abuses against the people of East Turkistan.    \nThis event will be hosted in person. Admission is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required. \nFace masks are required for all guests ages two and up. Complimentary masks are available at the Security desk. \n \n Register

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Josefina's Habichuelas / Las Habichuelas de Josefina by Jasminne Mendez
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special bilingual presentation of Jasminne Mendez’s newest children’s book\, Josefina’s Habichuelas / Las Habichuelas de Josefina. \nLike all kids\, Josefina loves to eat sweets. She loves warm chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven\, cupcakes and candy! One night\, while eating a piece of flan\, Mami asks her to consider giving up sweets for Lent\, the 40 days leading up to Easter. “That’s impossible!” Josefina says. When Mami promises to teach her how to make her favorite dessert\, habichuelas con dulce\, she agrees to give it a try. \nJosefina can’t wait to end her fast and eat the delicious sweet cream beans\, her family’s traditional Easter dessert. While she and her mom\, tías and abuela prepare the dish\, they dance to merengue music and tell stories about life back in the Dominican Republic. The kitchen fills with the aromatic smells of cinnamon and sugar\, but it’s the feelings of love and happiness Josefina will never forget. On Easter Sunday\, when the family eats the special dessert she prepared\, the girl’s grandmother proclaims\, “It’s the best pot of habichuelas con dulce I’ve tasted in my life!” \nThis heart-warming\, bilingual picture book for children shares a universal story all kids can relate to—learning about one’s culture through food\, music and family stories—while focusing on a cultural tradition specific to the Dominican Republic. As a bonus\, the book includes the recipe for this special dessert—in both English and Spanish! – Arte Público Press \nJasminne Mendez is a Dominican-American poet\, educator\, performer and award-winning author. Her first multi-genre memoir Island of Dreams (Floricanto Press\, 2013) was awarded Best Young Adult Latino Focused Book by the International Latino Book Awards in 2015. Her work can be found in the YA anthology Wild Tongues Can’t Be Tamed (Flatiron Books) and elsewhere. Her second YA memoir\, Islands Apart: Becoming Dominican American (Arte Público Press)\, will be released in 2022. SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Dan Grunfeld
DESCRIPTION:All times are shown in Central Time. \nDan Grunfeld\, once a basketball standout himself at Stanford University\, shares the remarkable story of his family\, a delicately interwoven narrative that doesn’t lack in heartbreak yet remains as deeply nourishing as his grandmother’s Hungarian cooking. The true improbability of the saga lies in the discovery of a game that unknowingly held the power to heal wounds\, build bridges\, and tie together a fractured Jewish family. From the grips of the Nazis to the top of the Olympic podium\, from the cheap seats to center stage at Madison Square Garden\, from yellow stars to silver spoons\, this story navigates the spectrum of the human experience to detail how perseverance\, love\, and legacy can survive through generations. Ernie Grunfeld\, Dan’s father\, escaped to America and went on to reach unimaginable heights as an NBA player and executive. \nBy The Grace Of The Game: The Holocaust\, A Basketball Legacy\, And An Unprecedented American Dream is available for pre-order at Brazos Bookstore. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required to receive the private Zoom link. \n \n Register
