SUMMARY:Reenactment: RBG’s Last Argument as a Supreme Court Advocate
DESCRIPTION:The Houston Bar Association is joining forces with the Holocaust Museum Houston to celebrate the life and legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Before becoming a judge\, RBG was a lawyer and a law professor. Join us on Thursday\, July 14\, 2022\, at 4:30 p.m. at the Museum to see a live reenactment of her last oral argument as an advocate before the United States Supreme Court. \nUsing an abridged version of the actual oral arguments in Duren v. Missouri\, 439 U.S. 357 (1979)\, a cast of lawyers and judges will invite the audience to step back in time to 1978\, when RBG made her case before an all-male court\, arguing that Missouri’s jury-selection system that allowed women to opt out of jury service violated the Sixth Amendment’s requirement that an impartial jury be drawn from a fair cross-section of the community. The program will begin with an overview of the background and procedural history of the case to set the stage for the oral arguments that will follow. The reenactment will feature a cast of twelve historical figures: nine United States Supreme Court justices and three advocates. A seasoned appellate practitioner will open and close the program and share reflections on the case and the role it played in RBG’s legacy as an advocate for gender equality. \nThe Houston Bar Association’s reenactment will complement the exhibition Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, on view in the Museum’s Josef and Edith Mincberg Gallery through July 31\, 2022. \nThis is an in-person event. Admission is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:“It’s a Mask / It’s a Virus / It’s a Knee” is a collective\, communal poetry video collage comprised of poems written by Houstonians about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic\, curated by 2021 Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow and Houston Poet Laureate Emeritus Leslie Contreras Schwartz. The project features Houston activists\, writers and performers who lend their voices to experiences ranging from the perspectives of students to healthcare workers\, to loved one’s dealing with a family member’s COVID infection\, as well as people dealing with anxiety\, trauma and rage after the George Floyd murder. \nThe screening debut of “It’s a Mask / It’s a Virus / It’s a Knee” will be followed by a reading of poems by poets ire’ne lara silva and Leslie Contreras Schwartz on illness\, COVID-19 survival and the body’s narrative of resilience in response to trauma and sickness. \nThis exhibit is made possible by the Academy of American Poets with funds from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. \nThe event will be hosted in person. Admission is free and open to the public. \n			\n				Register

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2022 Gerald S. Kaplan Public Lecture featuring Dr. Wendy Lower. The author and historian will discuss her latest book\, National Jewish Book award recipient The Ravine: A Family\, A Photograph\, A Holocaust Massacre Revealed. \nWendy Lower is the John K. Roth Professor of History at Claremont McKenna College and directs the Mgrublian Center for Human Rights at the Claremont Colleges (CA\, USA). She chairs the Academic Committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and has published several books on the Holocaust in Ukraine including Nazi Empire-Building and the Holocaust in Ukraine (2005)\, and co-editor (with Ray Brandon) of Shoah in Ukraine: History\, Testimony\, Memorialization (2008). Her work on gender and the Holocaust\, Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields (2013) was a finalist for the National Book Award and has been translated into 23 languages. Lower’s The Ravine: A Family\, A Photograph\, A Holocaust Massacre Revealed (2021) was shortlisted for the Wingate Prize and longlisted for a PEN.  \nThe Gerald S. DESCRIPTION:Join Holocaust Museum Houston for a half-day educator workshop on artwork of the Holocaust. \nIn this workshop\, educators will explore the role and purpose of art during the Holocaust through interactive tours of the Holocaust Gallery and Samuel Bak Gallery and Learning Center. Educators will learn about Holocaust artists and their artwork while engaging in fine arts based activities designed for the classroom. SUMMARY:Max M. Kaplan Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Max M. Kaplan Summer Institute for Educators at Holocaust Museum Houston is a four-day program that moves beyond the general history of the Holocaust to explore the various dimensions and implications of the Holocaust\, genocide and human rights. \nThe 2022 Max M. Kaplan Summer Institute will be held in-person. Due to health and safety protocols\, all participants must present proof of vaccination for COVID-19 during the application process. \nPresentations by scholars\, workshops\, and activities will introduce participants to the history of the Holocaust and genocide as well as a focus on human rights. \nThe program is directed toward educators on a secondary or higher level\, but university students and educators of all levels who have a specific interest in\, and background knowledge of genocide and the Holocaust are invited to apply. The cost to attend the program is $100\, which includes books and materials. \nFor their support of the Max M. Kaplan Summer Institute for Educators\, Holocaust Museum Houston thanks the Max M. Kaplan Teacher Education Endowment Fund\, the Gerald S. Kaplan Endowment Fund\, and the Anna and Emil Steinberger Scholarship for Teacher Education Endowment Fund. \nApplications are due June 1\, 2022. Around the same time\, the United States Supreme Court issued a horrendous decision known as Bowers v. Hardwick. The Bowers decision held that gay people were excluded from the protections of the United States Constitution. In 1998\, two men\, John Lawrence and Tyrone Gardner\, were arrested for having private consensual sex in their home. Mitchell spend the next five years\, with Lamba Legal as co-counsel\, fighting the case all the way to the Supreme Court and won. In 2003\, the Supreme Court issued the landmark decision known as Lawrence v. Texas\, which overturned Bowers v. Hardwick\, recognized the Constitutional rights of gay people\, and laid the foundation for the historic 2015 same-sex marriage decision. \nMitchell is a partner at Katine Nechman McLaurin LLP where he practices real estate litigation. SUMMARY:Profits and Persecution: German Big Business and the Holocaust with Dr. Peter Hayes
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Peter Hayes holds degrees from Bowdoin\, Oxford\, and Yale and was from 1980 to 2016 Professor of History and German and from 2000 to 2016 Theodore Zev Weiss Holocaust Educational Foundation Professor at Northwestern University. His publications have won several prizes and been translated into Chinese\, French\, German\, Italian\, Japanese\, Polish\, Slovak\, and Spanish.  His works on the Holocaust include not only Why? Explaining the Holocaust (2017)\, but also How Was It Possible? A Holocaust Reader (2015)\, The Oxford Handbook of Holocaust Studies (2010) that he edited with John K. Roth; and German Railroads\, Jewish Souls (2020)\, a study of deportation trains that he and Christopher Browning assembled around two path-breaking essays by the late Raul Hilberg.  From 2014 to 2019\, Hayes chaired the Academic Committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, on which he served for a total of twenty years. SUMMARY:Free Admission Day in honor of Stefi Altman
DESCRIPTION:Museum admission will be waived on Sunday\, May 15\, 2022 in honor of Holocaust survivor Stefi Altman\, z”l. \nStefi Altman was just 13 years old when Germany overran Poland in September 1939. Soon after\, Stefi’s two older brothers were arrested and sent to a labor camp\, and Nazi soldiers brutuall beat her fater and drove the family from their house. They fled to Stefi’s grandfather’s farm\, taking shelter in the barn. \nThe family remained together until 1940\, when Stefi was sent to the labor camp of Jastkov. Later she was sent to Treblinka and Majdanek. Next\, she was sent to the camp of Dorohucza. Although Dorohucza had neither gas chambers nor crematoria of the other camps\, death always hovered nearby. Like Stefi\, many of the inmates were only half alive by the time they got there. At the end of 1943\, Stefi discovered that her sister\, Kayla\, had also been sent to Dorohucza. But relief soon turned to horror when Kayla was brutally murdered.  \nStefi managed\, against all odds\, to escape Dorohucza. For the remainder of the war\, she hid in a coffin-like space underneath a barn that belonged to a sympathetic Polish farmer. After she was liberated by the Soviets\, she learned that her entire family had been murdered. \nStefi Altman\, z”l\, passed away in December 2017. \nIn addition\, Harris County Public Health will be onsite at Holocaust Museum Houston all day\, administering the COVID-19 vaccine. \n\nPfizer (ages 5 & up)\, Moderna (ages 18 & up) and J&J (ages 18 & up) vaccines available\nFirst\, second and booster doses available\nNo Photo ID is required\, but those receiving 2nd and booster doses must bring their vaccination card with them.\nInsurance is not required.\nChildren between the age of 5 and 17 must have a consent form signed on the day of the vaccination. \nWalk-ins will be accepted.\n\n			\n				Register

DESCRIPTION:This event is available to attend either in person at the Museum or virtually on Zoom. \nJoin Holocaust Museum Houston for a moderated panel discussion with local criminal justice leaders on the impact of RBG’s legacy on current criminal justice challenges. \nJustice Ruth Bader Ginsburg left a rich legacy on criminal justice questions that deeply implicate our shared values and the protection of lives and liberties. Our nation\, our state\, and our greater Houston community continues to grapple with vexing questions at the intersection of safety and justice that Justice Ginsburg addressed in her pioneering work as a public interest lawyer and jurist\, including the death penalty\, indigent defense\, pretrial detention\, and the role of parole and second-look policies. DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Museum Houston (HMH) invites you to enjoy free admission on Thursday\, May 12 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. during Free Extended Hours presented by Shell Oil Company. Visitors will have the opportunity to access HMH’s Holocaust\, Human Rights\, Diaries and Samuel Bak galleries along with entry to the exhibition\, Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This fascinating exhibition explores the American judicial system through one of its sharpest legal minds\, the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The exhibition is a vibrant celebration of Justice Ginsburg’s life and her numerous\, often simultaneous roles as a student\, wife\, mother\, lawyer\, judge\, women’s rights pioneer\, and Internet phenomenon. \nSpecial thanks to Shell Oil Company for generously supporting this event. SUMMARY:Concert for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Oleg Sulyga\, Tali Morgulis\, Alexander PotiomkinWe invite you on May 10\, 2022 to join us for a chamber music concert “For Peace” with Oleg Sulyga (Violin / Viola)\, Alexander Potiomkin (Clarinet)\, Tali Morgulis (Piano). These musicians’ passion for chamber music led them to a variety of engagements with world-known orchestras and ensembles in the finest concert halls. They all have roots from the Ukraine and call Houston their home. \nAll funds raised during the concert will be donated directly to the Ukrainian Red Cross. The organization is providing vital aid to people in Ukraine. \nThe Program of the concert will include works of Max Bruch\, Frederic Chopin\, Dmitriy Shostakovich\, Aram Khachatryan\, Myroslav Skoryk\, and Mykola Lysenko and others. \nMore about the musicians: \nOleg Sulyga (Violin / Viola)\, a native of Moscow\, Russia with Ukrainian roots and Belarusian family\, began his music education in Moscow Central Music School\, and later continued it at SMU in Dallas; Paris\, France and the University of Houston under the guidance of Professor Emanuel Borok. Currently\, Sulyga is a violinist of the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra\, Houston Ballet\, Mercury\, the Bach Society of Houston\, and is a frequent chamber musician\, teacher\, clinician\, and adjudicator. \nAlexander Potiomkin (Clarinet) joined the Houston Symphony as Bass Clarinet/Utility in October 2012. A native of Ukraine\, he moved with his family to Israel in 1991\, where he attended the Rubin Jerusalem Academy of Music while appearing as a regular substitute clarinetist with Israel Philharmonic. He came to Houston in 1995 to study at Rice University\, where he earned his Master of Music Degree in 1997. \nTali Morgulis (Piano) has appeared as a soloist with the Thüringen Philharmonic\, Malaga Symphony Orchestra\, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra\, Kaoshung Symphony Orchestra\, Haifa Symphony Orchestra\, and the Orquestra da Camera Theatro Sao Pedro. Her collaborative performances have seen her paired with Schlomo Mintz\, Vadim Gluzman\, and Uri Pianka and with numerous chamber ensembles\, including the Jupiter Chamber Players\, the Firebird Contemporary Ensemble\, and the Borromeo String Quartet. Currently Dr. Morgulis is an Associate Professor at the Moores School of Music\, University of Houston. \n			\n				Register
