SUMMARY:The Systematic Persecution of Uyghurs: Conversation with a Genocide Survivor
DESCRIPTION:This event is a rebroadcast of the November 2021 presentation by the Campaign for Uyghurs held at Holocaust Museum Houston \nThe Uyghurs\, a Turkic Muslim group\, have been targeted by the Chinese government for decades. In recent years\, the government has escalated a campaign of persecution and mass detention in a sprawling system of forced labor camps and prisons. Between one and three million Uyghurs—of a population of 12 million—are currently in some form of detention\, and those who are not still face rapidly tightening control restricting their ability to express their identity. – United States Holocaust Memorial Museum \nCampaign for Uyghurs works to promote and advocate for the human rights and democratic freedoms for the Uyghurs and other Turkic people in East Turkistan (referred to in China as “Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region”). It mobilizes individuals and the international community and builds bridges to take action on behalf of and to raise public awareness of the Uyghur issue with a special focus on Uyghur women and youth\, and to activate persons and entities to work together to stop the systematic human rights abuses against the people of East Turkistan. \nThis event will be hosted virtually. Admission is free and open to the public.\n \n Register

SUMMARY:The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government
DESCRIPTION:In correlation with the exhibit Blacklist: The Hollywood Red Scare\, join us for a special presentation by historian Dr. David Johnson on his book\, The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government. \nThe McCarthy era is generally considered the worst period of political repression in recent American history. But while the famous question\, “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” resonated in the halls of Congress\, security officials were posing another question at least as frequently\, if more discreetly: “Information has come to the attention of the Civil Service Commission that you are a homosexual. What comment do you care to make?“ \nHistorian David K. Johnson relates the frightening\, untold story of how\, during the Cold War\, homosexuals were considered as dangerous a threat to national security as Communists. Charges that the Roosevelt and Truman administrations were havens for homosexuals proved a potent political weapon\, sparking a “Lavender Scare” more vehement and long-lasting than McCarthy’s Red Scare. Relying on newly declassified documents\, years of research in the records of the National Archives and the FBI\, and interviews with former civil servants\, Johnson recreates the vibrant gay subculture that flourished in New Deal-era Washington and takes us inside the security interrogation rooms where thousands of Americans were questioned about their sex lives. The homosexual purges ended promising careers\, ruined lives\, and pushed many to suicide. But\, as Johnson also shows\, the purges brought victims together to protest their treatment\, helping launch a new civil rights struggle. \nThe event will be hosted virtually.  Admission is free and open to the public. \n \n Register

SUMMARY:Book Talk with Dr. Caitlin Ring Carlson\, author of "Hate Speech"
DESCRIPTION:In correlation with the exhibition\, Speaking Up! Confronting Hate Speech\, join us for a presentation by author Dr. Caitlin Ring Carlson on her book\, Hate Speech. \n“Author Caitlin Ring Carlson\, an expert in communication and mass media\, defines hate speech as any expression—spoken words\, images\, or symbols—that seeks to malign people for their immutable characteristics. Hate speech is not synonymous with offensive speech—saying that you do not like someone does not constitute hate speech—or hate crimes\, which are criminal acts motivated by prejudice. Hate speech traumatizes victims and degrades societies that condone it. Carlson investigates legal approaches taken by the EU\, Brazil\, Canada\, Germany\, Japan\, South Africa\, and the United States\, with a detailed discussion of how the U.S. addresses\, and in most cases\, allows\, hate speech. She explores recent hate speech controversies\, and suggests ways that governments\, colleges\, media organizations\, and other organizations can limit the spread of hate speech.” – MIT Press \nCaitlin Ring Carlson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Seattle University. Her primary research interests are in media law and policy as they pertain to new media\, freedom of expression\, and social justice. Most of her work focuses on the subject of hate speech. Her book\, Hate Speech\, was published by MIT Press in 2021. Her work on the regulation of hate speech\, by governments and social media organizations has been published in leading academic journals such as the Journal of Media Law and Ethics\, First Monday\, and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics. Carlson’s research about Facebook’s hate speech removal process using human content moderators and artificial intelligence has been featured in mainstream media publications\, including the Wall Street Journal\, Wired\, and Venture Beat. Professor Carlson teaches courses in Communication Law\, Social Media\, and Media Studies. She has a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Colorado\, Boulder. \nThe event will be hosted in person. Admission is free and open to the public. \nPlease note: In consideration of the health and safety of our event guests and museum staff\, HMH will require all event guests to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (including a booster shot) by presenting a vaccination card/photo or a negative test within the last 72 hours of event. SUMMARY:Matinee Film Screening: The Defiant Ones
DESCRIPTION:Left: “The Defiant Ones” movie poster; Right: Dr. John Sbardellati \nIn correlation with the exhibition Blacklist: The Hollywood Red Scare\, join us for a special matinee screening of the film The Defiant Ones. Dr. John Sbardellati\, Visiting Associate Professor of History at the University of Houston and author of J. Edgar Hoover Goes to the Movies: the FBI and the Origins of Hollywood’s Cold War\, will introduce the film. \nThe Defiant Ones\, Stanley Kramer’s landmark 1958 film\, presents audiences with a gripping and suspenseful story of two escaped fugitives fleeing from the law\, but weighed down by more than just their physical chains. Starring Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis\, this prison-break drama blends fine entertainment with a social message condemning racism. One of Poitier’s finest roles and regarded as one of the most prestigious films of its day\, The Defiant Ones garnered nine Academy Award nominations\, winning in two categories\, including best screenplay. Yet one of the screenwriters\, Nedrick Young\, had resorted to using a pseudonym in the film credits because he had refused to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee and subsequently found himself on the blacklist. This film offers us a unique window into the culture of the 1950s\, and the intersection of race and the Red Scare. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required. \nPlease note: In consideration of the health and safety of our event guests and museum staff\, HMH will require all event guests to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (including a booster shot) by presenting a vaccination card/photo or a negative test within the last 72 hours of event.
