SUMMARY:Free Admission Day in honor of Stefi Altman
DESCRIPTION:Museum admission will be waived on Wednesday\, May 15\, 2019 in honor of Holocaust survivor Stefi Altman\, z”l. \nStefi Altman was just 13 years old when Germany overran Poland in September 1939. Soon after\, Stefi’s two older brothers were arrested and sent to a labor camp\, and Nazi soldiers brutally beat her father and drove the family from their house. They fled to Stefi’s grandfather’s farm\, taking shelter in the barn. \nThe family remained together until 1940\, when Stefi was sent to the labor camp of Jastkov. Later she was sent to Treblinka and Majdanek. Next\, she was sent to the camp of Dorohucza. Although Dorohucza had neither gas chambers nor crematoria of the other camps\, death always hovered nearby. Like Stefi\, many of the inmates were only half alive by the time they got there. At the end of 1943\, Stefi discovered that her sister\, Kayla\, had also been sent to Dorohucza. But relief soon turned to horror when Kayla was brutally murdered. \nStefi managed\, against all odds\, to escape Dorohucza. For the remainder of the war\, she hid in a coffin-like space underneath a barn that belonged to a sympathetic Polish farmer. After she was liberated by the Soviets\, she learned that her entire family had been murdered. \nStefi Altman\, z”l\, passed away in December 2017. \nSupported by the Stefi Altman Endowment Fund.

SUMMARY:“The Walk to Freedom”
DESCRIPTION:Join the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) and Holocaust Museum Houston as we come together to commemorate Juneteenth. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration marking the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865\, it was on June 19th that Union soldiers led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger\, landed at Galveston\, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. The evening will begin at HMAAC with light refreshments and an historical overview of the history of Juneteenth. At 6:35 p.m.\, participants will take a reflective walk four blocks down Caroline Street to Holocaust Museum Houston to remember those who walked off plantations 148 years ago to begin their lives as freed individuals. The WALIPP-TSU Preparatory Academy will accompany walkers by playing and singing inspiring hymns of freedom. The evening will conclude at HMH with the screening of the documentary film “The New Juneteenth\,” followed by a question and answer session by filmmaker Isaac Fanuiel. DESCRIPTION:For the 75th anniversary of D-Day\, renowned author Alex Kershaw will discuss his latest book\, The First Wave\, with a fresh take on WWII’s longest day. He will discuss some of the remarkable men who carried out D-Day’s most perilous missions.  His group of unforgettable characters includes the first American paratrooper to touch down on Normandy soil; the British glider pilot who braved antiaircraft fire to crash-land mere yards from the vital Pegasus Bridge; the Canadian brothers who led their troops onto Juno Beach under withering fire; as well as a French commando\, returning to his native land\, who fought to destroy German strongholds on Sword Beach and beyond.   The first to fight when the stakes were highest and the odds longest\, these men would determine the fate of the invasion of Hitler’s Fortress Europe—and the very history of the twentieth century. \nAlex Kershaw is an author of books on WWII including the Bedford Boys and The Longest Winter. The First Wave is the capstone in Alex Kershaw’s remarkable career\, built on his close friendships with D-Day survivors and his intimate understanding of the Normandy battlefield.  \nCopies of Kershaw’s new book will be on sale at our museum store on the 1st floor.  After the talk\, Kershaw will be available for a book signing in the Moral Choices Hall outside the theater. \nThis event is made possible by the generosity of Bernstein. \n			\n				REGISTER TO ATTEND

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with QFest\, Holocaust Museum Houston’s young professionals’ group\, NEXTGen invites you to a screening of Portraits of the Rainbow. Photographer Leslie Kee lived in Japan for 25 years. As a bisexual himself\, he trains his gaze routinely on subjects of taboo and discrimination. He was the perfect match for the “Out In Japan\,” aiming to eventually feature 10\,000 LGBTQIA+s throughout Japan. He feels the time has come to push back against the pervasive prejudice and legal discrimination. The film follows the ambitious project for over a year as Leslie completes the first 1\,000 portraits. We get to intimately know a set of very different protagonists: two women\, deeply in love\, who have their first child and are faced with a society not ready to accommodate their family structure. Another woman\, devastated by the loss of her female partner to suicide\, finds hope in finally fulfilling her lifelong ambition of becoming a man. And a gay university professor who fights against the steep discrimination HIV-positives still face in Japan. Even Leslie himself has a life-changing experience. \nDirected by Ayumi Nakagawa. This film will be screened in Japanese and have English subtitles. \n(2018; 79 min; Japan; Japanese; Color; Digital) \nFollowing the screening of “Portraits of the Rainbow\,” Pride Portraits founder Eric Edward Schell will speak about how he created a global movement in Houston\, Texas by combining activism and photography. The LGBTQIA+ community and its allies\, with the help of Pride Portraits have a platform to share their narratives their way. Schell will also speak about Stonewall 50\, and what this past June meant for LGBTQIA+ History. \nOver the past two and a half years\, Pride Portraits has become the largest LGBTQIA+ visibility campaign to date. DESCRIPTION:Join Holocaust Museum Houston’s young professionals group\, NEXTGen\, for a Conversation With A Survivor featuring Bill Orlin. Between 1939 and 1945\, Bill and his family lived on the run. Bill\, the eldest son of Sender and Sonia Orlinski\, was seven years old when German troops invaded Poland and occupied his hometown of Brok. The Jewish residents were forcibly marched to Ostrow Mazowiecki\, about 50 miles northwest of Warsaw.  \nThe forced march\, although terrifying at the time\, may have saved the family’s lives. Once Bill and his family were in Soviet-controlled Poland\, they continued their eastward journey into the Soviet interior\, where they remained in relative safety for the rest of WWII. When Germany invaded the USSR in June 1941 the family “ran\,” recalls Bill. Although the family was together\, life was tremendously difficult\, suffering from hunger and malnutrition for the next several years.  \nThis special event will be at Kenny & Ziggy’s for National Delicatessen Month. SUMMARY:From behind the barbed wire: Uncaged Art from the Tornillo Childrens Detention Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Holocaust Museum Houston for a lecture by Dr. Yolanda Chávez Leyva\, Director of the Institute of Oral History at the University of Texas at El Paso and an Associate Professor in History\, as she explores the ethical and historical issues associated with curating an art exhibit created by anonymous migrant youth held in detention. Tornillo opened in June 2018 and closed in January 2019. At the time\, it was the largest detention center for young unaccompanied asylum-seekers. In December 2018 and January 2019\, students engaged in an art project intended to help them remember their towns\, cities and countries as well as the culture and history of where they came from. While psychologists and attorneys witnessed depressed and anxious youth\, held in prison like settings\, they were able to create beautiful art that spoke to their desire to be free.\nYolanda Chávez Leyva was born and raised on the Ciudad Juárez-El Paso border and has dedicated her life to listening to and documenting the histories of fronterizos\, border people. She specializes in border history\, public and oral history and Chicana history. She is co-founder of Museo Urbano\, a museum of the streets that highlights fronterizo history by taking it where people are from museums to the actual streets of El Paso.\nAdmission is free and open to the public\, but advance registration is required.\n			\n				Register

DESCRIPTION:oin us for a community art workshop with artist Theresa Escobedo. Participants will have an opportunity to learn how to make sugar skulls\, paper flowers and create papel picado in honor of Día de los Muertos. \nThe sugar skulls\, flowers\, and papel picado created in this workshop will also be included in the community ofrenda (altar) displayed in the museum through November. \nTheresa Escobedo (b. 1985) \nTheresa Escobedo is a multi-disciplinary artist\, curator\, and arts administrator active in Houston. Her creative work intersects ancestry\, history\, and spiritualism\, and combines elements of the artist’s mixed cultural heritage to demonstrate and ultimately represent broad ancestral influences and cosmopolitan spiritual perspectives. Her practice has evolved to include the design and installation of ofrendas\, each of which demonstrates a decisive act of remembrance and works to safeguard familial mythologies\, complex cultural histories\, and spiritual pursuits. These days\, her approach to altar-making merges indigenous practices with contemporary influences and affirms the universality of the practice of altar-making as an art form. \nHer most recent work\, presented at Holocaust Museum Houston\, has its roots in the family history described in the book Stolen Heritage. Authored by the artist’s third cousin\, Abel Rubio\, the published tome offers anecdotal accounts of a family’s struggle for survival in the Texas/Mexican frontier\, participation on both sides of the conflict during the Texas/Mexican revolution\, and the post-revolutionary trauma of stolen life and land. \nThe event will be hosted in person and is for all ages.
