DESCRIPTION:Known as “The Salad Bowl of the World\,” California’s Salinas Valley became an agricultural empire due to the toil of diverse farmworkers\, including Latinos. Professor Flores will discuss the history of how Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants organized for their rights in the decades leading up to the seminal strikes led by Cesar Chavez. She will also look closely at how different groups of Mexicans—U.S. born\, bracero\, and undocumented—confronted and interacted with one another during this period. Her book is an incisive study of labor\, migration\, race\, gender\, citizenship\, and class\, and offers crucial insights for today’s ever-growing U.S. Latino demographic\, the farmworker rights movement\, and future immigration policy. \nBook-signing after the lecture. The evening will feature guest speaker Steve Velasquez\, Curator for the Division of Home and Community Life at the National Museum of American History\, Smithsonian Institution. The exhibition tells the compelling story of the California farm workers labor movement of the 1960s and 1970s and explores Dolores Huerta’s impact as a cofounder and leading strategist of the United Farm Workers union. \nDolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields / Revolución en los Campos is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery\, Washington\, D.C. SUMMARY:“The Soap Myth”
DESCRIPTION:This film version of the play\, “The Soap Myth\,” is an interesting story that provokes discussion. More than a half-century after World War II at the desperate urging of a passionate survivor\, a young investigative reporter finds herself caught between numerous versions of the same story. Played out against the backdrop of deadline reporting and journalistic integrity\, the critically acclaimed “The Soap Myth” by Jeff Cohen questions who has the right to write history — those people who have lived it and remember\, those who study and protect it or those who would seek to distort its very existence? And finally what is all our responsibility once we know the truth? Arnold Mittelman\, the producing artistic director\, will introduce the film and take questions afterward. He is the president and producing artistic director of the not-for-profit National Jewish Theater/Foundation\, which celebrates the cultural significance of Jewish history and the creativity of Jewish American composers\, lyricists\, playwrights and performers.
