SUMMARY:Grit & Grace: How Jewish Women Built a Better Texas
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Jewish Historical Society (TJHS) is pleased to announce a special afternoon program and film screening at Holocaust Museum Houston on April 25\, 2026\, presented as part of the TJHS Annual Gathering. The featured documentary\, Grit & Grace: How Jewish Women Built a Better Texas\, received grant support from TJHS. Admission to the film is free of charge and advance reservations may be made through the Holocaust Museum Houston website. \nThe afternoon program will run from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm and will begin at 2:30 pm with a special 30-minute presentation by 6th grade students from The Emery/Weiner School titled “Texas Jewish Stories – Family Histories on the Journey to Texas.” These students will share personal family narratives that reflect the diverse paths Jewish families took in building lives across the state. \nAt 3:00 pm\, the program will continue with the screening of Grit & Grace: How Jewish Women Built a Better Texas\, a documentary directed by Barbara Rosenthal. Following the film\, Rosenthal will participate in a Q&A session with the audience. \nGrit & Grace explores nearly 200 years of Texas history through the lives and legacies of five influential Jewish women—Olga Kohlberg\, Gussie Oscar\, Dr. Ray K. Daily\, Fania Kruger\, and Frances Kallison. Their leadership and dedication in fields such as philanthropy\, medicine\, education\, and civic engagement helped shape communities across Texas and contributed to a more inclusive and dynamic society. \nThrough personal stories and expert insights\, the documentary highlights the intersection of Jewish\, female\, and Texan identities while preserving important histories that might otherwise be lost. \nThis program is one component of the Texas Jewish Historical Society’s Annual Gathering weekend in Houston. For the complete itinerary\, registration details\, and additional information\, please visit www.TXJHS.org.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Dr. Pamela Toler\, Author of The Dragon From Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Join Holocaust Museum Houston for a night with Dr. Pamela Toler\, Author of The Dragon from Chicago: The Untold Story of an American Reporter in Nazi Germany. \n \n \n \n \n“Today we face an alarming upsurge in the spread of misinformation and attempts by powerful figures to discredit facts so they can seize control of our political and cultural narratives. These are threats American journalist Sigrid Schultz knew all too well. The Chicago Tribune’s Berlin bureau chief and primary foreign correspondent for Central Europe from 1925 to January 1941\, Schultz witnessed Hitler’s rise to power and was one of the first reporters—male or female—to warn American readers of the growing dangers of Nazism.  She was one of the last to leave Berlin before it was too late.\n \n \n \n \nIn The Dragon From Chicago\, historian Pamela Toler tells the story of Schultz’s years spent courageously reporting the news from Berlin\, from the revolts of 1919 through the Nazi rise to power and Allied air raids over Berlin in 1941. At a time when women reporters rarely wrote front-page stories\, Schultz regularly  reported the truth about Nazi Germany in the face of censorship and the threat of expulsion\, internment\, or death.\nThe Nazis called Schultz “that dragon from Chicago.” One of her fellow correspondents called her “Adolph Hitler’s greatest enemy.” Schultz herself claimed to be “just a reporter.” Her story is a powerful account of one woman standing up for truth in an era marked by the spread of disinformation and propaganda spawned by hate.”\n \n \n \n \nBooks will be available for purchase by credit card.

SUMMARY:Houston Jewish Film Festival | Resistance: They Fought Back
DESCRIPTION: \nHolocaust Museum Houston is proud to present Resistance: They Fought Back as part of the Houston Jewish Film Festival.\n \n \n“We’ve all heard of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising\, but most people have no idea how widespread and prevalent Jewish resistance to Nazi barbarism was. Instead\, it’s widely believed “Jews went to their deaths like sheep to the slaughter.”  Filmed in Poland\, Lithuania\, Latvia\, Israel\, and the U.S.\, Resistance – They Fought Back provides a much-needed corrective to this myth of Jewish passivity. There were uprisings in ghettos large and small\, rebellions in death camps\, and thousands of Jews fought Nazis in the forests. Everywhere in Eastern Europe\, Jews waged campaigns of non-violent resistance against the Nazis.”\n \nStudents can receive a free ticket by emailing a picture of their student ID to mvance@hmh.org.\n \n RSVP

SUMMARY:"Passage to Sweden" Film Screening and Director Talkback
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\nBetween 1940-1945 the sheer luck of where you were living made a world of difference to the Jews of Scandinavia.  For unique political and geographic reasons\, the Scandinavian Jews of Sweden\, Norway\, and Denmark had very different experiences. During the German occupation\, Jews were rounded up and sent to concentration camps.  Defying the occupying German forces\, and protecting fellow citizens\, spontaneous and dramatic rescue operations were conducted to save thousands of Jewish lives.  First hand personal accounts also convey the extraordinary ways  Swedish diplomats leveraged their political position to save Jews from within Hungary and Germany. \nJoin us for a screening of the film followed by a talkback with Director Suzannah Warlick.  \n\n \n RSVP

SUMMARY:Author Talk | When You Listen To This Song: On Memory\, Loss\, and Writing with Lola Lafon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reception in celebration of HMH’s Boniuk Library reopening its doors to researchers and community members. As centerpiece of the celebration\, French author Lola Lafon will present a discussion of her book\, When You Listen To This Song: On Memory\, Loss\, and Writing. \nIn 2021\, Lola Lafon was granted permission to stay overnight—alone for ten hours—in the Annex in Amsterdam where Anne Frank and her family had hidden from the Nazis between 1942 and 1944. Lola Lafon’s visit to this space\, where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary\, evoked the confinement and constant danger suffered by the Franks\, and the family’s ghostly presence as well. “The night was inhabited\, lit by reflections\,” the author writes. “Some urgency dwelled at the heart of the Annex\, crouched there\, ready to be discovered.” \nLola Lafon introduces a new vision of Anne Frank\, not as a venerated and exploited myth but as the precocious\, ambitious\, and beloved girl she was\, as well as a disciplined writer whose well-loved diary is in fact a carefully constructed literary work. Throughout\, Lola Lafon reflects on what it means to lose loved ones\, both Lola Lafon’s own family in the Holocaust and her childhood friend to the Khmer Rouge. A prize-winner and bestseller in France\, this book asks us to consider the stories we tell ourselves about tragedy\, how we grapple with loss\, and why\, in the face of danger and confinement\, women write. \nThe event will take place in the Boniuk Library on the third floor. Light refreshments will be served. \n \n RSVP

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening | Anachronous
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Anachronous\, a new exhibition from Argentinian photographer Cynthia Isakson. The artist incorporates family photos into her own work\, weaving together their stories with hers to create a new narrative. Featuring 18 digital photographs printed on breathable waterproof fabric\, Anachronous projects moments from the past on top of contemporary portraits. Witness Warsaw\, Buenos Aires\, and Houston through five generations of the artist’s family.   \nThis exhibition is rooted in the power of family photos to tell a story\, to capture a moment in time that might otherwise be lost. In times of war and displacement\, people are forced to leave behind their homes\, their possessions\, and often their loved ones. But amidst the chaos and fear\, many choose to take with them a small piece of their past: a photograph that represents their history and identity. The photographs serve as a tangible link between the past\, present\, and future\, reminding us of where we came from and who we are. \n \n RSVP
