DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Black History Month at the Museum as the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society\, Willie Lee Gay H-Town Chapter explores the invaluable records for researching formerly enslaved and free persons of color in the immediate post-Civil War period. \nSession 1: “In Their Own Words”This presentation by Diane L. Richard\, MEng & MBA\, a professional genealogical researcher\, author\, and lecturer from North Carolina\, will focus on “Last Seen Ads\,” the Freedmen’s Bureau\, and Freedman’s Bank records. \nSession 2: “Slave Narratives: Telling Their Stories In Their Own Words”Sharon Gillins\, a native of Galveston\, retired educator\, practicing genealogist and genealogy educator will examine the historical period\, function\, and genealogical value of slave narratives\, published and unpublished narratives\, and records that are often overlooked and found in unlikely places. \nThese exciting educational sessions are brought to you through a partnership between the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society\, Inc.\, Willie Lee Gay H-Town Chapter (AAHGS)\, Holocaust Museum Houston\, and Freedmen’s Town Museums Houston. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but advance registration is required.
