Pero muy pocas personas saben sobre la incre\u00edble traves\u00eda que hicieron sus creadores, Margret y H.A. Rey, para escapar de la invasi\u00f3n nazi a Par\u00eds al comienzo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Ocultando unas cuantas pertenencias y manuscritos en sus mochilas y en las canastillas de sus bicicletas, la pareja jud\u00eda huy\u00f3 de Par\u00eds en junio de 1940, comenzando una odisea de cinco meses en bicicleta, tren y bote, el cual finalmente los traer\u00eda a las costas de Norteam\u00e9rica.<\/p>\n<p>Comenzando en los a\u00f1os previos a la guerra, \u00abEl escape en tiempos de guerra\u00bb explora las primeras colaboraciones creativas de los Rey y traza c\u00f3mo la historia del mismo Jorge (titulado originalmente \u00abLas aventuras de Fifi\u00bb) abarc\u00f3 el periodo de la guerra. El mono surgi\u00f3 como personaje en una de las historias de los Rey antes de la guerra, y el manuscrito que lleg\u00f3 a convertirse en Jorge el Curioso estaba ya en desarrollo en 1939. Sin embargo, las limitaciones de imprenta en tiempos de guerra, as\u00ed como la confusi\u00f3n debido a este periodo, previnieron que se llevara a cabo el contrato original.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando los Rey fueron obligados a huir de Par\u00eds al lado de miles de otros refugiados, con anticipaci\u00f3n a la ocupaci\u00f3n alemana, el manuscrito y las ilustraciones para el libro se encontraban entre las pocas pertenencias que pudieron traer con ellos. Escaparon v\u00eda Espa\u00f1a y Portugal, luego cruzaron el Atl\u00e1ntico a Brasil, y finalmente los Rey llegaron a los Estados Unidos en octubre de 1940. Un mes m\u00e1s tarde, recibieron un nuevo contrato de parte de Houghton Mifflin por \u00abLas aventuras de Fifi\u00bb, el cual despu\u00e9s cambi\u00f3 por \u00abLas aventuras de Jorge el Curioso\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>En exposici\u00f3n estar\u00e1n 25 litograf\u00edas enmarcadas del artista Allan Drummond y varias im\u00e1genes complementarias de archivo, propiedad de DeGrummond Collection of Children\u2019s Literature de la Universidad Southern Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>El texto de la exposici\u00f3n est\u00e1 dirigido a j\u00f3venes lectores y motiva al espectador a enfocarse en c\u00f3mo Drummons atrae el ojo con l\u00ednea y color, y escala.<\/p>\n<p>La exposici\u00f3n est\u00e1 basada en parte en la publicaci\u00f3n de 2005 \u00abLa traves\u00eda que salv\u00f3 a Jorge el Curioso: el verdadero escape en tiempos de guerra de Margret y H.A. Rey\u00bb (The Journey that Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey), escrita por Louise Borden e ilustrada por Allan Drummond (Houghton Mifflin Company, New York). La exposici\u00f3n est\u00e1 organizada y conservada por Beth Seldin Dotan, directora del Instituto para Educaci\u00f3n del Holocausto en Omaha, Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abEl escape en tiempo de guerra\u00bb (The Wartime Escape) viaja como parte de ExhibitsUSA, un programa nacional de Mid-America Arts Alliance.
