Casi todos los jud\u00edos que viv\u00edan dentro de las fronteras albanas durante la ocupaci\u00f3n alemana \u2013 aquellos de origen albano as\u00ed como refugiados \u2013 se salvaron.<\/p>\n<p>En un proyecto de cinco a\u00f1os, Norman Gershman, fot\u00f3grafo radicado en Colorado, emprendi\u00f3 un viaje para reunir los nombres de los justos no jud\u00edos que salvaron a jud\u00edos durante el Holocausto. Encontr\u00f3 que algunos de los nombres eran de albanos musulmanes. Entonces comenz\u00f3 una b\u00fasqueda para conocer y fotografiar a los rescatadores albanos o sus descendientes. Durante sus entrevistas, cuando pregunt\u00f3 por qu\u00e9 hab\u00edan rescatado jud\u00edos, la respuesta rotunda era \u201cBesa\u201d, el c\u00f3digo de honor profundamente arraigado en la cultura albana e incorporada en la fe de los musulmanes albanos.<\/p>\n<p>Como explicar\u00eda m\u00e1s tarde Gershman, \u201cNo hab\u00eda conspiraci\u00f3n del gobierno, red clandestina de escape para esclavos, resistencia organizada de ning\u00fan tipo, solo albanos actuando por cuenta propia para salvar las vidas de personas, las cuales corr\u00edan un inminente peligro. Mis retratos de estas personas y sus historias, fueron creados para reflejar su humanidad, su dignidad, sus convicciones religiosas y morales, y su valent\u00eda silenciosa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>La misi\u00f3n de Gershman es usar el arte como principal forma de expresi\u00f3n para romper los estereotipos y construir con las ra\u00edces profundas de un humanismo que traspase las fronteras raciales, \u00e9tnicas, religiosas y nacionales. Sus fotograf\u00edas tienen un prop\u00f3sito. Sin embargo, lo que se extrae es su creencia primordial en la bondad de la gente reflejada en sus retratos.
