SUMMARY:Woman\, the Spirit of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Woman\, the Spirit of the Universe features stunning bronze collars inspired by 23 American heroines who fought bravely and tirelessly for equality. The collars are stitched by hand using hand-worked cotton and then cast in bronze. For most of us\, a collar is simply an adornment for a shirt or dress. In Carolyn Marks Johnson’s art\, a collar symbolizes the struggle to establish women’s rights. \nThe women featured in the exhibition span generations\, from Margaret Brent\, who practiced de facto law in the late 1600s to two giants of Texas politics\, Governor Ann Richards and Representative Barbara Jordan. Other leading women in the exhibition include Dolores Huerta\, who championed labor rights; Chief Wilma Mankiller\, first female chief of the Cherokee Nation; Sojourner Truth\, who carried the message of abolition to every part of America she could reach; and abolitionist and social activist Harriet Tubman\, known for freeing enslaved people through the Underground Railroad. \nThe most recognizable collar of the exhibition represents the late Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, affectionately known as Notorious RBG. Ginsburg wore different collars to express a variety of messages while sitting on the court\, inspiring young girls and women of all ages to speak up for things they believe in. \nJohnson just completed two new collars that will debut in the HMH exhibition to honor former Houston Mayor Annise Parker and the city’s first librarian Julia B. Ideson. Parker\, a longtime public servant and one of the first openly gay mayors of a major U.S. city\, served as Houston Mayor from 2010 to 2016. She is a former HMH board member and 2010 recipient of the Museum’s Guardian of the Human Spirit Award. Since 2017\, Parker has served as president of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and Leadership Institute. Julia B. Ideson was in the first class to major in the new discipline of Library Science at The University of Texas. Hired in 1903\, she managed Houston’s library services until her death in 1945. Ideson is known for starting five neighborhood libraries and creating the first bookmobile. She was also active in the women’s suffrage movement\, the League of Women Voters\, and was the first Houston woman listed in Who’s Who in America. \nIn 1985\, Carolyn Marks Johnson graduated from South Texas College of Law in Houston\, Texas. After a prominent career as a lawyer\, Johnson served as a senior district judge in Harris County. During her spare time\, Johnson was a docent for the Heritage Society and the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston (MFAH). Johnson then decided to enroll at The Glassell School of Art and graduated with a painting degree in 2014. Today\, when not sitting by assignment as a retired senior district judge\, arbitrator\, mediator\, umpire\, she studies sculpture and is actively involved in women’s rights. \nThe late Philip Renteria (1947-1999)\, a friend and sculpture teacher at The Glassell School of Art\, suggested the title of the exhibit and the idea in conversation with Johnson about one of his own works. He believed that the spirit of the universe is feminine\, and a woman’s spirit holds the universe together.\n			\n				get tickets

Fisch.  \nEstarán en exhibición obras de “Luz de la estrella amarilla: una lección de amor del Holocausto”\, en la que Fisch describe su experiencia en un campo de concentración nazi. \nTambién en exhibición estarán obras de “La metamorfosis de la libertad”\, el cual Fisch escribió como testimonio del valor que él atesora por sobre todos los demás: la libertad. Fisch es oriundo de Budapest\, Hungría y es superviviente de un campo de concentración nazi. \nDespués de la guerra regresó a Hungría y terminó sus estudios de medicina. Vino a los Estados Unidos en 1957. Fisch ha llegado a ser reconocido a nivel internacional por su investigación clínica pero también como un distinguido artista visual.

SUMMARY:Escapando a sus límites: los niños de Theresienstadt
DESCRIPTION:Ubicada a aproximadamente 40 millas al norte de Praga\, en la República Checa\, Terezin fue construida en 1780 para servir como fuerte y guarnición militar. Cuando la Alemania nazi ocupó Checoslovaquia en 1941\, el pueblo fue convertido en un gueto donde juntaban a los judíos antes de enviarlos más al este a los campos de exterminio. \nEn menos de cuatro años\, más de 150\,000 hombres\, mujeres y niños fueron llevados a Theresienstadt. De ellos\, hasta 35\,000 murieron en el gueto mismo\, y más de 88\,000 personas fueron deportadas a campos de exterminio en Polonia.  \nMás de 12\,000 niños menores de 15 años pasaron por el campo de concentración de Terezin (también conocido con su nombre alemán Theresienstadt) entre los años de 1942 y 1944. De ellos\, más del 90 por ciento perecieron durante el Holocausto.  \nUn grupo de adultos dedicados se pusieron como meta cuidar de los niños\, no solamente de cubrir sus necesidades físicas sino también de adoptar el papel de maestros. Estos adultos intentaron aislar a los niños en la medida de lo posible de la deprimente realidad de la vida en el gueto y de los temores de un futuro incierto.  \nA pesar de sus esfuerzos\, es evidente por los dibujos\, diarios y revistas producidas clandestinamente por los niños que ellos comprendían lo que pasaba a su alrededor. Cerca del 90 por ciento de los niños de Theresienstadt perecieron en los campos de la muerte. Para muchos de los niños de Theresienstadt\, los objetos creados mientras estuvieron ahí son las únicas cosas que quedan de sus vidas.  \nEsta exposición explorará la capacidad de los niños de ir más allá de sus barreras físicas por medio del arte y la escritura. En la exposición se exhibirán más de 40 objetos en préstamo de Beit Theresienstadt en Israel\, incluyendo collages\, dibujos\, diarios\, revistas\, juegos y marionetas\, muchos de los cuales nunca antes se habían exhibido. La exposición contará con una sección interactiva que invita a los visitantes\, jóvenes y viejo\, a reflexionar en la exposición y a crear una continuación de la historia de los niños en Theresienstadt. \nEsta exposición ha sido posible gracias al generoso apoyo del Albert and Ethel Herzstein Charitable Foundation; Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany\, Inc.\, y el Eleanor and Frank Freed Foundation\, con un agradecimiento especial a Continental Airlines\, aerolínea oficial del Museo del Holocausto de Houston.

DESCRIPTION:«Go Away\,» Courtesy of Saul Balagura \nEl Museo del Holocausto de Houston ofrece una perspectiva única de uno de los periodos más oscuros de la historia\, en una nueva exposición itinerante que tiene como propósito representar el Holocausto no desde una perspectiva histórica\, sino desde la concepción abstracta de un artista respecto a la emoción\, el drama y el valor que fomentó este periodo. \n“En busca de esperanza”\, pinturas y poemas de Saúl Balagura\, estará en exhibición en el Three Allen Center\, 333 Clay St.\, en el centro de Houston hasta el 31 de octubre de 2008. El horario es de 8 a. m. a 6 p. m. de lunes a viernes. La entrada es gratuita. \n“En busca de esperanza” es una exhibición de homenaje en honor a quienes perecieron en el Holocausto\, así como una manera de recordar a los estadounidenses sobre la importancia de la coexistencia\, en el séptimo aniversario de los ataques terroristas al World Trade Center\, el 11 de septiembre de 2001. Esta exposición consistirá de 19 obras que están incluidas en la colección más grande de Balagura “Serie del Holocausto”. Las pinturas están hechas en aceite\, acrílico y acuarela sobre papel y lienzo. Cada pieza está acompañada de poesía y prosa escrita por Balagura\, que cuenta las historias del Holocausto por medio de conmovedoras imágenes y sentidas expresiones. \nEl seguro para “En busca de esperanza” fue provisto por Norma y Lawrence Gordon\, con un especial agradecimiento a Continental Airlines\, aerolínea oficial del Museo del Holocausto de Houston.
