Holocaust Museum Houston ( opened its doors in 1996 and has been accredited by the Alliance of American Museums since 2012. The Museum is dedicated to educating people about the Holocaust, remembering the 6 million Jews and other innocent victims and honoring the survivors' legacy. It also endeavors to bring awareness to the dangers that prejudice, hatred and violence brought about during the Holocaust and to remind us that these dangers are still prevalent today. The Museum promotes understanding, remembrance and education with the goal that both students and the general population become aware of the lessons of these tragic events. Since its opening, impassioned notes, poems, artwork and other gifts, from school children and adults alike, attest to the life-changing thoughts generated by just one visit to this unique facility.

Holocaust Museum Houston stands boldly as an institution dedicated to the past, present and future.  Through teacher training, educational and outreach programming, exhibits, library, archives and museum tours, the Museum teaches the events of the Holocaust and other genocides to demonstrate the destructive power of prejudice and the importance of moral courage and individual responsibility.

The Museum facility includes a permanent exhibition, “Bearing Witness: A Community Remembers,” that focuses on the stories of Holocaust survivors living in the Houston metropolitan area. The Museum is also proud to permanently display a 1942 World War II railcar of the type used to carry millions of Jews to their deaths and a Danish rescue boat of the type used to save more than 7,200 Jews from almost certain execution at the hands of Nazi Germany. The Museum also features a theater, several galleries, halls, classrooms, libraries, archives and memorials used for exhibits and educational purposes.

A major component of Holocaust Museum Houston’s programming is educational outreach, including programs for teachers and students. Teacher programs assist educators in incorporating the events of the Holocaust and other genocides into their curriculum. Teachers may also receive training on the Holocaust through various workshops and invaluable resources for their schools through the Museum’s 15-year-old curriculum trunk program. Furthermore, the Museum offers on-site programs for students, as well as an annual Yom HaShoah scholarship. Through a Web-based curriculum, the Museum is reaching out into schools and the community at large to teach all students—including at-risk individuals, social resiliency in the face of damaging behaviors like bullying and excluding.

Holocaust Museum Houston currently has an annual operating budget of approximately $3.2 million and an endowment of more than $8 million. It is a member of the Houston Museum District Association.

Position Summary:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will direct the finance and accounting functions for Holocaust Museum Houston (HMH). The CFO will report to the Executive Director and will manage a staff of two.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Direct the financial and accounting function and maintain responsibility for monthly and annual financial reporting, financial analysis, audit, banking relationships, cash management and budgeting.
  • Focus on streamlining financial operations within HMH to affect greater efficiencies that have the potential for a significant impact on the bottom-line. Assess all processes and personnel with the aim of improving effectiveness and client service orientation of the finance function.
  • Provide day-to-day advice and counsel to home office staff on finances, processes, financial risk assessment and reporting.
  • Identify and implement cost and expense control initiatives.
  • Prepare the annual budget, financial projections for year-end forecasting and audit coordination, including preparation and collection of audit information, as well as function as the primary liaison to auditors.
  • Provide guidance and direction to the Houston Holocaust Museum Foundation, Inc. audit process.
  • * Prepare regular financial reports and analyses concerning risk management and make presentations to the Executive Director, Chairman the Board and the Finance and Audit Committees.
  • Provide leadership on other committees and task forces as appropriate.
  • Supervise the preparation of and guarantee the accuracy of required filings with the state and federal government.
  • Negotiate and review major contracts.
  • Administer the federal/state grant receipt and reporting function as well as the grant distribution process.
  • Interface with other members of the senior management team on HMH’s strategic direction.
  • Manage the organization’s banking relationships and cash position; work closely with bankers in the transfer and management of trusts and assets from bequests.
  • Oversee the organization’s investment portfolio; review, direct and supervise the organization’s investment managers and advisors. Review HMH’s investment performance; evaluate the investment managers’ performance and, as necessary, participate with the HMH Foundation Board of Trustees in the selection of new advisors and managers.
  • Manage and ensure training and development of finance and accounting personnel.
  • Develop relationships and interface effectively with HMH volunteers.
  • Manage facilities and office vendors that support the Museum directly.
Professional Qualifications and Experience:
  • 10 to 15 years of progressively responsible experience in financial and accounting management.
  • Knowledge of financial and cash management principles, including investments, forecasting, budgeting, auditing, and accounting.
  • A high degree of responsiveness in counseling and providing advice to board committees including, home office staff.
  • Strategic financial and analytical skills coupled with strong business acumen.
  • Proven ability to identify opportunities for improved efficiencies and cost control through the implementation of best practices.
  • The ability to “get behind” the numbers to effectively prepare and provide financial analysis, to develop and implement effective financial strategies that will enable Holocaust Museum Houston to make sound business decisions.
  • Familiarity with current Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge/Financial Edge financial systems and their operations and knowledge of information systems management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills coupled with the ability to lead, mentor and motivate a diverse work group.
  • The ability to deal with broad range of constituencies.
  • A demonstrated willingness to pursue continuous improvement techniques.
  • A Master of Business Administration degree or Certified Public Accountant certification  is preferred.
