How much of a commitment does it take to be a volunteer?
Outside of volunteers in the docent program, the commitment is up to each individual. Some people volunteer once a week, some twice a week, some once a month and some only for programs.
How much of a commitment is required for the docent program?
The docent program requires a one-year commitment and a promise to give tours at least once a month. The program also requires a commitment to training. Classes meet twice a week for six weeks to give docents the proper grounding in the Holocaust and skills to give tours.
Are there volunteer opportunities at the Museum that do not deal with the public?
Yes. Numerous opportunities exhist behind the scenes. You can help with exhibits, data entry, mailings, translation or work in the Museum's Boniuk Library.
What does a Front Desk Volunteer do?
Our Front Desk Volunteers are extremely important since they are the public's first contact with the Museum. They greet visitors, rent audio tours and handle transactions for the Museum bookstore.
What hours do Front Desk Volunteers work?
The front desk is in operation seven days a week. Volunteers can sign up for weekday shifts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Weekend shifts are from noon to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 to 5 p.m.
What does an Exhibit Volunteer do?
Exhibit Volunteers help with the installation and removal of the changing exhibits in the galleries. (Please note that this can involve manual labor like hanging artwork, patching holes or painting walls.)
What does a Data Entry Volunteer do?
Data Entry Volunteers help the Visitor Services Department by keying visitor information into the database. Accuracy and attention to detail is important.
What does an Office Assistant Volunteer do?
The Office Assistants help out during the week with various projects requiring copying, stuffing envelopes, filing and other office work.
What does a Bookstore Volunteer do?
The Bookstore Volunteers help out when it comes time for inventory. They count supplies of items for the bookstore, including books, postcards, posters, buttons, stickers, videos, tapes and CD-ROMs.
Can I volunteer in the library?
Yes. The Boniuk Library needs volunteers seven days a week.  You can perform a variety of tasks, including shelver, processor, indexer, researcher and reference desk attendant.
Can I help by doing translations?
Yes. Translators are needed to work with original source materials in the archives as well as to translate marketing and informational materials into other languages.  Languages needed include Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian and Polish.
If You Believe
If you believe…
That a systematic destruction of a people should never happen…
If you believe…
That too many of our children are immersed in a culture of violence and intolerance…
If you believe…
That education is unique in its ability to transform ignorance into respect for those who are different…
If you believe…
That prejudice and hatred can be overcome…
If you believe…then act!
