Docent Program

HMH's Docent Program has been generously underwritten by the Anna and Emil Steinberger Foundation. The dedicated docents of Holocaust Museum Houston have the unique opportunity to effect lives every day, especially those of young people, by making the connections between the Holocaust and the prejudices in our society today. They have led nearly 1,000 tours for adults, senior adults and students. These diverse groups have come from around Texas, and as far away as Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma.

In our multi-ethnic and constantly changing city, it is imperative for students and people of all ages to reach a mutual understanding and respect for those who differ from themselves. This is a challenge that docents face with each tour, and for this reason, their work is immensely rewarding.

After a recent tour, Deborah Deittrick, a history teacher from Reagan High School, wrote to the Museum, "I have been searching for years to reach my students about issues of tolerance and humanity. The field trip clearly taught invaluable lessons about both. They will never forget the lessons of the Holocaust and that gives me hope for the future."

Volunteers will be trained in the history of the Holocaust and taught to give tours during seven weeks of training.
